Before and After the BBQ: Fourth of July Cleaning Tips

As the Fourth of July is fast approaching, we’re all looking forward to family gatherings, fireworks, and of course barbecues. To make sure our celebrations go as smoothly as possible,it's essential to prepare our barbecue spaces to be ready for these festivities. A clean and tidy environment not only ensures a great party but also a clean and comforting atmosphere for friends and family.

And after the last sparkler has fizzled out, knowing how to tackle the post-celebration mess can save you a lot of hassle. To ensure your peace of mind before and after your Fourth of July barbecue, we’re sharing our best cleaning tips and tricks for this 4th of July!

Pre-BBQ Cleaning Tips

  1. Start with the Essentials

First, focus on all the areas your guests will notice the most.

Your entryway sets the tone for the rest of your house so keep that in mind. Since it's a small space, even a little bit of mess can make the space seem cluttered and messy which is why it is so important to keep it as empty as possible.

Sweep and vacuum the floors, store shoes and coats in a nearby closet to declutter, and disinfect high-touch surfaces like door handles.

To dust, use a microfiber cloth because they are made from polyester a synthetic material that has millions of tiny dense fibers that create surface area for the dust to cling to.

  1. Clean your Backyard and Outdoor Spaces

In NYC, outdoor spaces can accumulate dirt and grime very quickly. Start by sweeping or pressure washing your deck or patio. Clear any leaves and debris, sweep away cobwebs, check outdoor lights and replace any that are burned out. Lastly clean any patio furniture including tables, chairs, and cushions using a mild soap solution. Make the solution by using an equal mixture of white vinegar and water. To add a fresh scent, use a few drops of any essential oil you like. Our recommendation and favorite is Tea-Tree essential oil because of its natural antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral characteristics.

  1. Prepare Your Grill and Cooking Area

Your grill is the star of the show, so make sure it’s ready to shine! Transform your Fourth of July BBQ with the ultimate grill cleaning hack: using a grill stone. Unlike traditional wire brushes, grill stones mold to the shape of your grates which not only offers a much deeper and thorough clean but it also eliminates the risk of metal bristles breaking off and contaminating your food. Once your grill has cooled to a safe temperature, simply scrub away food residue and grease with the grill stone’s firm back-and-forth motion. Make your grill safer for your family and friends this 4th of July by using a grill stone.

Post-BBQ Cleaning Tips

  1. Declutter

Decluttering is one of the most crucial steps after a party.

Start by collecting and disposing of large items like disposable cups, dirty napkins, and empty soda cans from your space. Don’t forget to check your bathroom and kitchen for trash as well.

Set up separate bins in a central spot in your home to make trash and recycling sorting easier. Before going to relax do one final walkthrough to pick any remaining trash and recyclables.

  1. Time Your Tackle

It is often best to do the majority of the cleaning on the same day of the gathering so you can wake up to a tidy house but at times it might be late and you're exhausted from all the festivities, try to prioritize these tasks before bed and leave the rest for the next morning.

Tonight:

  • Put Away Leftover Food: To prevent any pests or insects, store all food properly.

  • Empty the Cooler: Return all your unopened beverages to the fridge and let your cooler dry out.

  • Treat Stains: To prevent stains from setting, address spills and stains immediately.

Our recommendation for an at-home stain remover if your party ends too late is using Dawn Dish Soap and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Always use two parts 3% hydrogen peroxide with Dawn Dish Soap one part. Do not use any natural dish soaps.

  1. Tackle Your Kitchen and Floors

The kitchen and floors are often the most affected areas after a party. Wash dishes or load them in the dishwasher. Wipe down all kitchen surfaces, including countertops, the stove, and the sink. Sweep or vacuum high-traffic areas to remove dirt and debris, then mop hard floors to eliminate sticky spots and spills.

To leave a fresh fragrance in your home add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to your mop water. Use a handheld vacuum cleaner to pick up any crumbs and dust left on furniture or upholstery.
