10 Essential Cleaning Tips for a Fresh Start to the School Year

As this school year is quickly approaching, it’s the perfect time to give your home a fresh start. While juggling work, school, extracurricular activities, family time, having a clean home can make all the difference. A clean, clutter-free space can ensure focus and productivity making the transition from summer vacation to back-to-school season run much more smoothly. Here’s Bright Space Cleaning’s essential cleaning tips for a fresh start to the school year.

1. Declutter & Organize

Before fully diving into cleaning, start by decluttering every room. Kids grow up fast, so clothes, shoes, and coats from last year might not fit them this upcoming school year. Going through the items in their closets, and putting them into donate, throwout, and keep piles will help make space for new clothes and items. This can also be a fun chance to have some family time for you and your kids by doing a fashion show while trying on your clothes and shoes. Make sure to go through their toys as well; some can go unused for years before you finally donate them. Not only should you declutter your kids' areas, but also yours. Go through your bedroom, office rooms, and common areas to ensure that you don’t have unnecessary items in your home.

2. Deep Clean Bedrooms

Your child’s bedroom is where they’ll be spending most of their time recharging or studying. Focus on deep cleaning their rooms so they can focus on their academics. Start by dusting all the surfaces, washing their bedding, vacuuming carpets, and wiping down walls. Organize their study area to make sure they are able to learn and are free from distractions. If you can air out their bedding to let it absorb the fresh air and sunlight. This can eliminate lingering odors and give your bedding natural freshness.

3. Organize School Supplies

Gather all school supplies, organizing and placing them in a dedicated area can help with last-minute scrambling. Labeling bins or folders can also help maintain organization throughout the year. Kids usually lose or run out of supplies after a few weeks or months so a dedicated space will make it easier for them to find what they need for school.

4. Clean and Organize the Entryway

The entryway is the first thing you see and it often becomes the dumping grounds for shoes, coats, backpacks and lunchboxes. Creating a system for school gear can be beneficial. Adding a shoe rack and coat hooks can help declutter throughout the school year. Using decorative bins to store accessories like umbrellas, shoes, hats, gloves, sports equipment, or anything else your family needs to get to school on time can make mornings run easier.

5. Freshen Up The Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home especially during the school year. Deep clean your fridge and pantry, discard expired items and organize snacks and lunch ingredients. Having an organized pantry where your kids can easily access snacks for after school can help you have more time for other tasks. Scrub down your oven and stove, use a degreaser, and don’t forget the range hood (replace the filter if necessary!).

6. Create A Homework Station

Designate a clean, quiet, and organized area for homework and studying. Stock it up with all necessary supplies like pens, pencils, paper, a calendar and make it an area free of distractions. Regularly clean this area to make sure it stays decluttered for its daily uses. You can also fill the area with greenery for an extra mood booster. Having this homework station provides routine and helps children focus.

7. Bathroom Refresh

Deep clean your bathrooms to make sure they are ready for the morning frenzy. Scrub tiles, clean the toilet, sink, and mirrors to maintain cleanliness. Replace any old towels, and restock your bathroom on all needed toiletries. Consider making a weekly cleaning schedule to keep the bathroom fresh throughout the school year.

8. Wash Windows & Curtains

Clean windows allow more natural light into your home, creating a brighter and more inviting environment. Take the time to wash windows inside and out if you can and clean or replace curtains and blinds. This will not only make your home more inviting but will also create a more pleasant atmosphere for your family.

9. Clean & Disinfect Electronics

Electronics are both essential for both students and parents, especially throughout the school year. Education today looks entirely different than just a few years ago, kids spend lots of time on electronics and these can get dirty really fast. Clean and disinfect laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other devices regularly to prevent the buildup of dust, dirt, and germs. Provide them with the right cleaning supplies like a microfiber towel, and a delicate cleaning solution to ensure consistent cleanliness throughout the school year.

10. Set Up A Cleaning Schedule

Incorporate a cleaning schedule that involves the whole family to maintain a freshly clean home throughout the school year. Assign age-appropriate tasks to each family member, and set aside time each week for a quick clean-up. Create a family calendar that divides daily and weekly tasks among your family members.
